The TriStar Neurosciences Symposium is scheduled in close proximity to the World Stroke Day. Such has been the case for the prior two years (TriStar Stroke Symposium). We aim to provide education on neurosciences in general and stroke in particular. This year, our keynote speaker is J. Claude Hemphill III, MD from UCSF. We envision ourselves as a deliberate force to get Tennessee out of the Stroke Belt.

The American Heart Association s Greater Washington Region Health Strategies Team (Senayt Assefa, Roxana Hoveyda, Meredith May, Jessica Moise, Jen Witten and interns Lena Amad and Kristina Sasser with support from Cathleen Grzesiek and Keith Everett), launched a local social media campaign and urged DC City Council to pass the DC Stroke Systems of Care Act of 2013. Covidien branded FAST information as well as information on the legislation was passed to each member of Council, their staff and the Mayor’s office. The DC Stroke System of Care Act of 2013 provides an opportunity to streamline the stroke care process and put in place specific standards to ensure each stroke victim gets the best quality care available. Currently, there is no legislation that mandates a system of care approach. Volunteers, Amie Hsia, MD of MedStar Washington Hospital Center, Kathleen Burger, D.O. of George Washington University Hospital and Mary Cres, BSN, RN of George Washington University Hospital, led by Jen Witten, testified in support of the legislation.
