An interactive hands-on skills training workshop on multi-disciplinary care in stroke rehabilitation for nursing officers will be held at the General Hospital, Trincomalee. This will focus on small group training, where participants will rotate between training stations of physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, nursing care and mental health support. Several activities to mark the World Stroke Day are planned for the 28th October at the Teaching Hospital, Kurunegala. Acute thrombolytic therapy with tPA at the Stroke Unit will be launched. A full day public awareness campaign will be held in the hospital premises. Exhibition stalls with demonstrations on various aspects of stroke care will be set up. The main entrance area of the hospital will be decorated with banners carrying messages and theme of the World Stroke Day 2015. There will be a street drama giving the message of stroke prevention and emphasizing the importance of early arrival at a hospital.
Media coverage is arranged covering the entire public awareness campaign.

Sri Lanka Stroke Clinical Registry(SLSCR) project, sponsored jointly by WFN and WSO is carried out by the advisory committee of SLSCR in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Sri Lanka. The SLSCR web site and the database for Stroke Registry will be launched on 29th October 2015 by the Director General of Health services of the Ministry of Health, at the media conference held at the Health Education Bureau organized to mark World Stroke Day 2015.

The main ceremony organized by the National Stroke Association of Sri Lanka to mark the World Stroke Day will be held on the 29th October 2015. This event is organized in collaboration with the Health Education Bureau of the Ministry of Health. - Coordinator - Dr Udaya Ranawaka)

Dr Palitha Mahipala, Director General of Health Services will be the Chief Guest. The theme for the event will be the theme for the World Stroke Day - “I am Woman - Stroke affects me”.

The following events will take place;
1. Awarding of Prizes to the winners of the National Schools Art Competition, which was conducted over the last couple of months with the help of the regional educational authorities. The winners at district level were previously selected, and the national level winners will be recognised at the main ceremony on the 29th.
2. Launch of the Stroke Awareness Poster in Sinhala and Tamil languages (the national languages of Sri Lanka) and a public education campaign based on the FAST theme
3. Launch of a Pilot Study on the proposed online National Stroke Registry
4. A Media Seminar on Stroke - for media personalities covering national TV, radio and print media

The opening of a Stroke Unit with 8 dedicated beds will be the main feature of the World Stroke Day activities at the General Hospital, Polonnaruwa. A workshop on multi-disciplinary approach to stroke rehabilitation for nursing officers will be conducted on the same day. An awareness campaign on stroke too will be launched with a public education programme for those attending the hospital, with regular broadcasting of health messages and distribution of educational materials. A comprehensive workshop on stroke rehabilitation for nursing officers and other health care professionals will be held on 29th October to mark the World Stroke Day. Poster competitions on prevention of stroke for medical students and stroke rehabilitation for medical officers will be conducted, and winners be awarded prizes at a ceremony. A booklet " A Guide on Stroke Management" - a simple guide primarily targeting paramedical staff and junior doctors will be launched.

Health education Bureau of Ministry Of Health and National Hospital

A research study was conducted on awareness of stroke, among the general public. Data was collected by interview based questionnaire in public places of Colombo city enrolling highly mobile diverse community. The study was conducted by Mr Janaka Suneth Bandara, Publicity officer with the technical partnership with Dr Uthpala Amarasinghe, consultant community physician. This study reveals that only 36% of participants were aware on stroke correctly while 14% said it affects male only. 8% stated that treatment is useless and 94% of the sample had said it is more beneficial to go for indigenous treatment after the acute stage. Overall results suggested that only 30% of the people have reached a satisfactory level of the basic awareness on stroke. The detailed results were attached as a doc and ppt.
A media seminar was conducted to raise the awareness of the journalists on Stroke and world stroke day theme. Director General of Health Services, Dr Palitha Mahipala made the opening remarks and Health Minister had sent his good wishes for Stroke prevention activities. Dr Padma Gunarathne, consultant Neurologist takes the lead as previous years and other Neurospecialists who provides acute care, were participated for special lectures. While Mr Suneth Bandara presented the results of the preliminary analysis of the study, Dr Amal Harsha De Silva, the Director of Health Education Bureau, did a great service in raising the knowledge of journalists by using evidence based research. There were around 100 journalists participated. Art and poster competition was held and prizes were distributed to school children. Sri Lanka National stroke association also played a remarkable role in disseminating health messages at this event. A panel discussion was held at the end where a number of queries from journalists were effectively answered by the specialists further exhibiting their extensive practical experience on them. A special thank goes to all the journalists, specialists and also to the general public who participated for the study making this event a reality on preventing stroke.
