To mark World Stroke Day 2015, the Stroke Team at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) is organizing a World Stoke Day Symposium to raise awareness of the key issues relating to stroke in Qatar. The event will feature a number of presentations from senior HMC leaders involved in the delivery of care to stroke patients, including updates about the nationwide public stroke awareness campaign that HMC has been running in 2015 and a video with testimonials from stroke patients recalling their positive experiences of care at HMC.
HMC’s stroke service has made significant improvements to the delivery of care in recent years. The redesign of a specialized stroke service featuring a multi-disciplinary care team at HMC in March 2014 has played a key role in a range of improvements in stroke care. This has led to a number of improvements in care, including 1) A reduction in the average length of stay for stroke patients 2) An increase in the rate of thrombolysis treatment 3) A reduction on the rate of complications for stroke patients.

Additionally, in December 2014, the stroke service became the first of its kind in the Middle East to be accredited by the Joint Commission International (JCI). JCI accreditation is based on quality and safety across all clinical and management functions.
Hamad Medical Corporation has been running a campaign this year to raise public awareness of the signs and symptoms of stroke and the correct action to take if people suspect a stroke. The awareness campaign uses the internationally-established F.A.S.T. message to highlight the major signs of stroke and reinforce the need to act quickly. The campaign features radio and television commercials, advertising in newspapers, print media and online, and campaign messaging in shopping malls.
