Stroke Action Nigeria

The 'FIRST EVER' Nigeria Stroke Reference Group (NSRG) will be inaugurated at the Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH) by the Permanent Secretary for Health Mr Linus Awute , on behalf of President Muhammadu Buhari on 15th September 2015. The NSRG is an outcome of the FMOH - Stroke Action Nigeria Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed in September 2013. The Medical Association of Nigerians Across Great Britain (MANSAG) formed an alliance with Stroke Action UK and Nigeria to push the MOU implementation.

The NSRG membership has been convened and consist of representatives of all the health and social care professional associations in Nigeria. The event will take place on the 9th Floor Conference Room.

Following the inauguration, the NSRG will hold its first meeting on 16th September 2015, also at the FMOH. The NSRG terms of reference include:

1. Develop a national stroke strategy for Nigeria
2. Develop a national stroke register for Nigeria

These are two key areas of collaboration in the FMOH - Stroke Action Nigeria MOU

Stroke Care International 

Stroke care Team visit IDPs to carry out health checks, educate and distribute items such as pens bags, and other promotional items. Stroke care International will also be inaugurating their centre on the 29th of October, the plan is to have a poster presentation on QOL of the Nigerian stroke survivor, female carers to speak on the quality of life of the Nigerian stroke survivor, also on healthier lifestyle. We plan to give awards to some of our outstanding stroke survivors.

Being an individual who founded an ngo, a strong advocate for mainting good health, memeber f the nigeria red cross society above all with little or no financial suport. i was able to have a radio session where the campaign was propagated. talking about the signs, courses, symptoms treatment of stroke and after care. first aid applicatio after an incidents and introduce the FAST approach. the radio station happened to be in a student community. i believe that in the event of a stroke attack the nearest person can offer first aid . this first aid includes the FAST check signs and ofcourse calling for professional medical help. since stroke can attack anybody of any age at anytime it is important that we are all aware.

Livinghealth International

In conjunction with Spine Fixed In Abuja, we produced a short film drama on the need to act FAST when a stoke occurs by addressing social perceptions. The video is available on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-3cYeWtfqA0) and Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/dradebayoblog/videos/993976944000755/). Within 48 hours, the video has been watched over 4000 times on Facebook.

Stroke Team, OAUTHC, Ife

The Multidisciplinary stroke team comprising doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and dieticians will carry out stroke awareness and screening among market women and men at the central market in Ife. participants will have weight, BMI, blood pressure and blood sugar checked. Talks will be given on stroke risk factors, warning signs and prevention using the attached brochure. Copies will be given out. Talks will also be given to school children in selected primary and secondary schools. An interactive radio and TV phone in programme will also be done.

Stroke Action Nigeria

Stroke Action Nigeria will host its 4th Annual Stakeholder Conference, THE NIGERIAN STROKE ASSEMBLY, on World Stroke Day Thursday 29th October 2015. 


The event will bring together and engage the government, health and social care professionals, stroke survivors, carers, agencies and members of the public to continue dialogue on how to roll back strokes in Nigeria, as well as, celebrate achievements made by Stroke Action in:
1. Securing an MOU with the Federal Ministry of Health
2. Inauguration of the first ever multi-disciplinary Nigeria Stroke Reference Group (NSRG) to develop a national stroke strategy and stroke register.
3. Implementing a national ’Power to STOP Strokes Campaign’
4. Establishing the first Life After Stroke Centre in Onitsha, Anambra State
5. Establishing the role of Stroke Ambassadors who have developed Stroke Support Groups across nine states: Abuja FCT, Anambra State, Benue State, Delta State, Edo State, Imo State, Lagos State, Ogun State
The Stroke Assembly which will be held at the Hilton Transcorp Hotel Abuja will be followed by an 'Inaugural Gala and Fundraiser' to benefit the 'Life After Stroke Center' projects.
