On the eve of ‘World Stroke Day’ (29/10/2014) department of Neurology, GHC, Chennai organised a one day stroke awareness and risk assessment camp at OPD, GHC. The camp began at 9.30 AM. SMS Hospital

We have Pink City Press club in our city where all the press reporter collect every day. I thought it is the mass media which is the main way to educate our community. In our country most of the people read news paper and watch television. One day prior to the event I sent SMS to all the news channels that I am organising a event about stroke risk calculation for the journalists. I arranged for some posters and made a team of few technician who can check blood pressure, blood sugar and do ECG. There is stroke risk calculator available on UCLA website. I have internet connection in my iPhone. I made two proforma one for knowing how much knowledge they have about symptoms, causes and treatment and another for risk calculation. I could screen 100 press reporters in six hour period and made conclusion that 50% of the reporters were not fully aware of stroke disease and 34% were having high risk of stroke in next 10 years. I made them realised that like you people are too not aware of this disease and at high risk for stroke. I gave them data of stroke prevalence, incidence and future impact on economy and disability related to this disorder.
This led to wider coverage of this event and ultimately public education about need for education for recognition of symptoms and risk factors of stroke.

The Stroke Services, Department of Neurology, PGIMER organized a 3 day stroke awareness program “Strike Out Stroke 2014 (SOS ’14) from 29th to 31st October 2014” with special focus on Women and Stroke health. National Institute of Nursing Education, PGIMER and Centre of Social Work, Panjab University collaborated with PGIMER for the campaign. This collaboration widened the scope of the campaign where most sections of society were covered.
The first day of the event saw massive public participation on special information counters displayed in and around PGI campus. Free checkups were offered for (BP monitoring, blood sugar & lipid profile over the 3 days. On second day, interactive sessions in various city colleges were organised by Neurology team from PGIMER led by Dr Dheeraj Khurana. On third day, the women police force was addressed about stroke who pledged to spread the message further.
It was surprising to see that a sizeable population was unaware of risk factors and symptoms of stroke. The stroke facts were highlighted in the campaign, the main target being women as she remains nonchalant about her personal well-being and health and the message was well accepted.
