I prepared posters, badges, and talk in Hindi language. Invited all the press report for lunch on 28th October 2013 at 12:30PM. I prepared a press note about what is stroke, risk factors and recognition of stroke onset. I also included what are the superstitions related to stroke disease. Important problem in this part of India is that most of the patients visit faith healer first than doctor and waste the precious time for stroke management. We have a stroke unit with the facility to thrombolyse the clot but not have sufficient patients in time window. Our main aim was to create awareness about recognition of stroke symptoms and come to hospital for treatment rather than reaching to local doctor/ faith healer. I briefed to media person in manner of press conference. They took coverage of my talk and published in news papers and telecast in TV news on 29th October. News papers are the best way of public education because every literate person read it in this part of our country. TV news in only for those who have the facility and time to watch it. I got calls from many patients and got feed back that they were not aware about stoke disease. Last year I organized this event and invited public but unfortunately only few patients turned up. That is why this time I only targeted press reporters so that they publish such type of news as well to educate people. I received Palatucci Advocacy Leadership training by American Academy Of Neurology in year 2012 at Austin, USA, about public education of stroke disease.

I am organizing a press conference for media coverage regarding identification of stroke onset, risk factors and need of early treatment. I am also creating awareness to avoid traditional treatments and superstitions regarding stroke, since it delays to seek treatment after stroke onset. Our country may have increase load of stroke patients in future and public education is the cheapest and only way to prevent these preventable strokes.

Narayana Medical College and Hospital Nellore

10/29/2013

WORLD STROKE DAY ACTIVITIES. AXON NEURO AND REHAB CARE NELLORE ANDHRAPRADESH. World Stroke day was celebrated for a whole month. The theme of 1 in 6 (Because we care) was propagated. Focusing on the theme ‘Because we care’ the emphasis was on stroke prevention by the Axon Neuro and Rehab Care, Nellore, Andhra Pradesh. Free medical camps were held in the hospital and also at outreach areas. A total of 5 Medical camps covering a total of > 1200 persons above 40 years were screened. All patients underwent a detailed questionnaire regarding their dietary habits and physical activity. Blood pressure and plasma sugars were evaluated. Height and weight was checked and their BMI was calculated grading them as normal, overweight and obese. With all these risk factors evaluation the public were counseled regarding their stroke risk according to stoke risk card. Later all patients were given a short briefing on stoke regarding its symptoms, etiology and need for risk factors identification and modification. All patients interacted and cleared their doubts at all camps. The stroke risk score and the interaction helped the public to recognize and identify stroke symptoms and risk factors. Stroke Sunday was organized. Patients and relatives were gathered and stroke survivors meet was organized. Awareness of stroke and the importance of stroke rehabilitation were emphasized by the rehabilitation team. Interviews in the local news channels and articles in the press were given which covered a large section of public. Pamphlets depicting stroke risk factors and the signs of stroke. The ‘FAST’ signs were depicted in the local Telugu language. The same was depicted in flex and posters and placed at strategic locations. With this we could cover a large section of public. A booklet on stroke was released in English and local Telugu language which covered all aspects of stroke including rehabilitation. The booklet was named RISE ‘a guide to life after stroke’. The booklet was distributed all through the month to all the patients of stroke and also to the general public for awareness. Both the booklets were uploaded on the website. http://www.drbindumenon.com/images/RISE_English_book/index.html http://www.drbindumenon.com/images/RISE_Telugu_book/index.html On various days, press releases with several tips to prevent stroke including the warning signs of stroke were released. 2 days was dedicated to free stroke prevention clinic and about 120 people were screened for stroke risk. 11 were detected to be hypertensive and 4 diabetic. In the camps, it was noted that about 30 % were at stroke risk. It was noted that physical activity was nil in almost all people in the screened camps. We feel that the month long activities could help the public understand stroke better.
