October 29 2010
Hyderabad, INDIA
On World Stroke Day (29 October), we are planning to organize a meeting with stroke survivors and other people who are at risk for stroke. At this meeting, participants will be educated about the stroke epidemic and its preventive aspects. Healthy lifestyle will be stressed. Stroke survivors will be encouraged to motivate others in understanding and following preventive aspects of stroke. Stroke survivors will also be encouraged to share with other participants the difficulties that they experienced after stroke. We sincerely believe that this kind of awareness has long-lasting impact.

A stroke support group will be formed from the same people with the assistance of a stroke team and a social worker. We feel that this will be a nice platform for them and they can plan periodic meetings to discuss the various problems that they are facing. In each meeting, there will be a talk about a specific aspect of stroke by a stroke team member. This provides a two-way learning between the stroke team and stroke survivors.

We are planning this kind of education on a regular basis at our institute. We are printing a booklet on stroke prevention and treatment aspects. We are also planning to have a dedicated stroke helpline.

On World Stroke Day, I will be organizing a free medical camp in Hyderabad which is expected to be attended by thousands of people. At the same time, we will screen individuals for stroke risks and carry out secondary prevention measures.

On 29 October, I will also be appearing on several TV channels and FM shows educating the public about stroke.

I recently organized a 2K run with the objective of creating and spreading awareness about stroke in Hyderabad on 12 September. This was one of the several events that I had planned for International Stroke Day.The event was attended by more than 3000 people from all walks of life, including youth and women and was a great success. The run was flagged of by the health minister of Andhra Pradesh and was attended by a number of dignitaries from different fields. We presented to them the common types of strokes, risk factors, acute treatment methods /options and also enlightened the crowd regarding primary and secondary prevention of strokes. I distributed pamplets in English, Hindi and Telugu. The event was widely publicized in print and electronic media. Television 9 (TV9), the popular news channel gave live coverage of the stroke run for almost two hours.

I was also featured in several TV live medical programs and interviews such as on TV Sukheebhava, Vanita TV, NTV, ABN Andhrajyothy, etc..and newspapers such as Andhrajyothy. I have used these as platforms to educate public about stroke and the importance of recognizing early stroke symptoms and seeking medical care promptly.

I have educated several hundreds of 108 staff (EMRI) in Hyderabad as I believe that paramedics have a key role in early recognition of symptoms and prompt transfer to the medical centre.

We plan to observe the World Stroke Day mainly by organising a public open house about stroke on the day. The purpose of this would be:

- to raise the awareness about stroke as a corporate social responsibility and disseminate accurate information about stroke amongst the lay public and primary care physicians and consultants from other specialities. This is especially important as we launched the first ever organised stroke care, including a stroke thrombolysis service, in eastern India in November 2009.

- primary target audience is the lay public and public opinion makers.

- to launch the CMRI Stroke Club as an integral part of CMRI Stroke Care to promote health education and the sharing of information amongst stroke survivors and their families.
