Ministry of Health

2014.10.29

In Chile, stroke is the first cause of death, with one death every hour, making it a national health priority. The Ministry of Health (MOH) has developed a Stroke Action Plan 2014, integrated strategic actions to improve stroke prevention, treatment and rehabilitation within the National Health Services. The Action Plan includes an awareness campaign considering that 90% of the adult population cannot recognize the three main symptoms. The Action Plan was launched on World Stroke Day at the national and regional levels, with the participation of principal stakeholders. The awareness campaign was initiated by the Vice minister of Health with a flash-mob at a central subway station in the Metropolitan Region. Similar activities were held throughout the country. The central element of the campaign is a 3D animated video highlighting the sudden manifestation of the main symptoms, face, arm and, speech, and the need to consult the emergency room immediately. The video was distributed within the Non-Communicable Diseases Department network of the MOH (www.redcronicas.cl) and simultaneously uploaded to youtube and other social networks. Until today it has had 174,000 hits https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ByXNor-LZ-A&list=UUWK9Zhk-Z0jFNKrdm6Y5kCQ
