Ghent University Hospital

For several years already the multidisciplinary Stroke Unit team of the Ghent University Hospital organizes a stroke awareness event on World Stroke Day. The event aims at increasing knowledge on stroke, including stroke risk factors, recognition of acute stroke symptoms, the concept of “time is brain” and acute treatment options.
This year our stroke awareness event will be held at a big Shopping Center in the city center with a focus on the multidisciplinary approach and early rehabilitation. Speech therapists will give advice on swallowing and speech difficulties. Dieticians will provide visitors with specialized diet advice. Occupational therapists and physiotherapists will provide information on rehabilitation after stroke. Visitors will be able to get an assessment of their stroke risk factor profile (blood pressure, glycaemia, BMI etc.) by a team of stroke nurses.
