Ghent University Hospital / Dpt. of Neurology Stroke Unit

2014.10.29

For several years already the multidisciplinary Stroke Unit team of the Ghent University Hospital organizes a stroke awareness event on World Stroke Day. The event aims at increasing knowledge on stroke, including stroke risk factors, recognition of acute stroke symptoms, the concept of “time is brain” and acute treatment options.
This year our stroke awareness event will be held at the magnificent open City Pavilion in the center of Ghent (http://www.visitgent.be/en/city-pavilion ) with a focus on food (healthy food, special diets and swallowing problems). A gastronomic chef and his team will give several cooking sessions to demonstrate healthy and tasty feeding solutions for stroke patients with or without swallowing problems. Speech therapists will give advice on swallowing and speech difficulties. Dieticians will provide visitors with specialized diet advice. Visitors will be able to get an assessment of their stroke risk factor profile (blood pressure, glycaemia, BMI etc.) by a team of stroke nurses.

Just like last year, we organize info sessions, both in the hospital entrance and on the local markets of Bruges, on stroke, risk factors, recognizing stroke, treatment and prevention. People can also join our competition, where they have to answer questions about stroke facts and can win healthy prices, such as sphygmomanometers, pedometers, cookbooks with heatlhy recipes, coupons for squash etcetera. They can have their risk calculated on cardiovascular disease and have tips on how to prevent this. They can also have their blood pressure measured.

This event is planned to be repeated every year. This year we also cooperate with the other hospital in Bruges to reach as many people as possible. Last edition, over 2000 flyers with FAST symptoms on were distributed. 336 persons took part in our competition. This year, there will be 4 separate info session, so we hope to at least triple this number. All of the organisation is done by our multidisciplinary stroke team and relatives, from collecting sponsoring, over logistics and flyering to the actual info session. <br /> I think that a campaign with a competition as incentive is relatively new in the health sector. On this short video, some footage of our previous edition: www.youtube.com/watch?v=TfKVnw-Hub0
