Kolkata, India: Dipes Mandal

Prof. Dipes Kumar Mandal, eminent neurologist of Kolkata realized that the first step to tackle stroke malady was awareness and thus was born his brain child: Stroke Foundation of Bengal (SFB) in 2006 which under his single handed efforts has successfully carried forward the directives of WSC. Thousands of stroke leaflets (In Bengali & English) are being distributed everyday. From designing the SFB website, conceptualizing the quarterly bilingual stroke Bulletin and the stroke documentary for stroke awareness, all activities of SFB are overseen by Prof.Mandal. Under his leadership the, Stroke Support Group of SFB (second in India) and Bolpur branch of SFB in Birbhum, a remote district of West Bengal was formed. On 29th October a health camp was held at AMRI Hospitals, Kolkata under the aegis of SFB. Around 50 people were screened for high BP, blood sugars. This was followed by an awareness program where Prof.Mandal reiterated the importance of this year’s World Stroke day theme ‘I am woman’, risks of stroke in women, and the preventive methods. He also talked about the stroke riskometer. This was followed by an interactive session between the audience and the doctors present. All India Radio WSD theme and stroke from 29th -31st Oct featuring the secretary of SFB.

These SFB activites have made a breakthrough in spreading Stroke knowledge to the people of Bengal, not only the urban but also rural areas. We have used the local language in our campaigns. Almost all districts of West Bengal (population- 91million ) as well as the neighbouring states of Tripura, Assam, Orissa and other North Eastern regions of India as well as the neighbouring country of Bangladesh are benefitted. The stroke riskometer app has been introduced, soon the Bengali version will be available and this will expand stroke campaigns in multiples. All India Radio and national television, Doordarshan covering more than 90% of our population have regularly featured SFB’s Stroke programs. We do not have a study to find out the exact percentages of awareness, due to lack of resources both manpower and financially, but our success of the campain is reflected in more organizations observing WSD in Kolkata now, the regular feature of SFB by the national television and radio network and of most important is the common man who is now more conversant with stroke and its symptoms as well as need for proper rehabilitation and need for care of the caregivers in West Bengal.

We are a not for profit , non govermnetal organization lacking funding and people power from any agencies-governmental or non governmental. However Our Founder President, Prof .D.K.
Mandal has spear-headed all activities including organizing seminars, talks, formatting and distributing leaflets, publishing the Stroke bulletin and regularly updating our website and Facebook pages. We have received unflinching encouragement from the world stroke leaders and the WSO, support of the print and electronic media namely All India radio and National television (Doordarshan) and moral support from our friends and well wishes and some 50 odd members of SFB which include non medical people in different vocations as well as stroke affected people and their families. This has helped us to overcome financial and human barriers in reaching the remote people of West Bengal. Our 20 minute Bengali documentary with English subtitles on stroke is the first one in India, solely produced and circulated by SFB for free. We have distributed CDs of this in local trains and also blood pressure instruments to rural people. The web and the facebook have made things easier on the urban front. Most Indians use smart phones hence introduction of stroke riskometer will intensify our campaign.
