Nigeria - World Stroke Day Events

We had a series of events aimed at creating awareness about stroke risk factors, prevention and recognition

Event 1:A media show on radio (Nigeria Info, Lagos, Nigeria) focused the stroke epidemic, stroke eisk factors, prevention and recognition. Date: 24th October.Speaker: Dr Ahmed Wahad, consultant neurologist, OAUTHC, Ile-Ife.

Event 2: Walk for Stroke; Date: 27th October; Venue: Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC), Ile-Ife and Ilesa. This walk involved a walk round the hospital by members of the Multidisciplinary Stroke Team of the hospital, distribution of stroke awareness fliers to members of staff, visitors and patients, and an interactive talk to patients about stroke prevention (at the Wesley Guild Hospital Unit of the Hospital, Ilesa). The campaign was also taken to the Chief Medical Director and the rest of the Hopsital management who not only endorsed but joined in the campaign. Interestingly, the Director of Administration was at the Federal Ministry of Health at the time, she put on the campaign vest and distributed the stroke awareness fliers to the staff of the Ministry.

Event 3: A church campaign. Date: 29th October; Venue: Chapel of Grace, OAUTHC, Ile-Ife.

Event 4: A TV show on WazobiaMax TV, Lagos, Nigeria. Date: 31st Ocotober; Speaker: Dr Ahmed Wahab, consultant neurologist, OAUTHC, Ie-Ife. http://wazobiamax.ng/videos_categories/gudu-morning-naija/

Event 5: Stroke Updates for Physicians; Date: 31st October; Venue: OAUTHC, Ile-Ife. Topics presented include "Childhood Stroke" by Dr Tosin Olorunmoteni, consultant pediatric neurologist and "Stroke Risk Factors and Prevention" by Dr Bimbo Fawale, consultant neurologist and his team.

Event 6: A Newspaper article on stroke which features, essentially, an interview with Dr Morenikeji Komolafe, consultant neurologist. The article highlights a variety of interesting issues including stroke risk factors, prevention, recognition, myths and misconception and the need for early presentation at the hospital following stroke. http://www.tribuneonlineng.com/watch-salt-intake-prevent-stroke/

Event 7: The team plans to visit a couple of schools in Ile-Ife and Ilesa to create awareness about stroke among school children in days to come.
